PAUL ELIASBERG LANDSCAPES OF THE SOUL
01.11.2019 - 02.02.2020
This exhibition is based on the generous gift made in 2015 by the artist’s daughter, Mrs Danielle Eliasberg, and unveils an aspect of the art of German emigrants in France after the Second World War. Son of a Russian-Yiddish translator, Paul Eliasberg grew up in Munich and Berlin before coming to Paris in the late 1920’s. During the Vichy regime, he fled and sought refuge in the Free Zone. From 1958, Eliasberg saw his popularity take on an international dimension and his watercolours, drawings and engravings attract wide attention. Images of imposing cliffs or flat landscapes, cathedrals and gothic towns, or impressions of his travels to Spain, Israel and Greece enabled Eliasberg to develop a personal form of figurative depiction. This visual language opens the doors to a visionary surrealism, thus providing him with an unexpected context.
